Canister Filters

Canister Filters

Canister filters are used by aquarium hobbyist enthusiasts who seek superior mechanical, biological and chemical filtration. They are superior filters for freshwater aquariums. However, they have limited usage for a saltwater aquarium often best suited for a fish only setup as porous rock, media reactors, and protein skimmers will often make a canister filter unnecessary. They are best for heavily stocked, planted, discus, and african cichlid aquariums.

Canister Filters work by pulling water out of your aquarium and through the their canister bodies. The water is then pushed through the various channel cambers in the canister to filter out impurities and harmful nutrients from your water. The main advantage with canister filters over hang-on filters is the amount of volume they hold.  All canister filters hold an incredible amount of filter volume allowing you to add any type of media or filtration you want to your tank. They provide great flexibility along with ease of use and since most of the parts are hidden in the canister.   Unlike hang-on filters, canister filters are completely sealed. This allows you to place the canister below the aquarium because the pump will lift the return water back into the aquarium. This also means that they can be disconnected from the tank for maintenance and cleaning without disturbing your tank occupants. With a canister filter you get a high quality filtration unit that provides a clean professional look in your aquarium.
